Electric co-ops across the country are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the date their individual systems were energized. In South Carolina, Aiken Electric Cooperative will be the first of the 20 electric cooperatives to celebrate. Their anniversary date is November 8, 2013. Horry Electric’s anniversary date is January 7, 2016.
Horry Electric was organized April 24, 1940, but our system was energized January 7, 1941. We will be celebrating our 75th anniversary on January 7, 2016.
Leading up to the celebration, co-op officials are trying to collect interviews from people who can talk about when Horry Electric first turned the lights on in Horry County.
“If you, a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or cousin have a story you or they are willing to share, we’d love to hear it,” says Penelope Hinson, local page editor for South Carolina Living magazine. “You or they may have been a young child at the time or maybe even a teenager working on the family farm,” she continues. “If it happened in Horry County and it was Horry Electric that brought the electric service for the first time, we want to hear the story.”
Stories will be collected through interviews in person or by phone. “We may video a few of them and we may publish some along with a current photograph of the person and any appropriate photographs that would go with their story,” says Hinson.
Members who are interview candidates or who have relatives or friends who might be able to help are encouraged to let the cooperative know by email or by phone. “We’ll need the name, location address, telephone number, email address and a brief description of their memory of the lights coming on at their house or in their community for the first time,” says Hinson. “We’d also like to know if the interview candidate is willing to be interviewed; photographed and/or filmed for a print publication and/or video.”
