Five classrooms in four local Horry County schools will be surprised today with news they are each a recipient of a Bright Ideas grant awarded by HEC (Horry Electric Cooperative) and HTC (Horry Telephone Cooperative). “Nicole Hyman, senior marketing coordinator for Horry Telephone and Toni Gore, marketing and public relations assistant for Horry Electric just hit the road to make the rounds to surprise the teachers and their classrooms with the exciting news,” says Penelope Hinson, manager of public relations, marketing and energy management for Horry Electric, adding that the Bright Ideas grant program is part of National Co-op Month celebrations for the sister cooperatives.
Both headquartered in Conway, Horry Electric an Horry Telephone launched the Bright Ideas program in January 2007. The grants awarded to classrooms are used to help fund projects outside of normal public school funding parameters and can be made available to all disciplines in grades K-12 in Horry County. “The best part about the program is that it is fully funded by the proceeds from the annual Co-op Cup Golf Tournament, hosted by HTC and HEC employees each fall,” says Hinson.
The call for applications for the grants being awarded today went out in May. The deadline was June 1. A total of $4,825 is being awarded.
